Finite-frequency nonlinear effects in the dynamics of superfluid /sup 4/He films

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
A theoretical scheme is proposed to study the nonlinear effects of a finite-frequency external driving field on the vortex pairs in helium films on the basis of the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. The screening effect due to free vortices is considered self-consistently in the Debye-Hueckel approximation. The finite-amplitude phenomena observed in Bishop and Reppy's torsional oscillator experiments (Phys. Rev. B 22, 5171 (1980)) are interpreted in terms of the extra dissipation due to free vortices generated in the external field of finite frequency.
