Conserving energy in historic buildings

Journal Article · · Constr. Specifier; (United States)

The special considerations in retrofitting historic houses with energy conserving components are discussed. While many historic houses have inherent energy saving characteristics, the incorporation of passive measures and preservation retrofitting are often necessary. Passive measures include lowering thermostats, utilizing windows efficiently, and maintaining the heating system properly. Retrofitting problems that should be considered include inappropriate building alterations, moisture-related deterioration problems, and materials that are incompatible with existing materials. Retrofitting measures discussed include air infiltration reductions, attic insulation, storm windows, basement and crawl space insulation, duct and pipe insulation, awnings and shading devices, vestibules, replacement windows, wall insulation for various wall types and materials, and waterproof coatings for masonry.
