A well apparatus is described adapted for connection in series with a pipe string, the pipe string extending into a producing well and forming a casing annulus with the casing and having a flow passage therethrough for the flow of hydrocarbons through the pipe string to the surface. The apparatus consists of: a tubular member having connection means at each end for connection in series with the pipe string, the member having an outer barrel and an inner mandrel forming a chamber therebetween and having fluid communication means providing fluid communication through the barrel and mandrel and between the casing annulus and the flow passage; the inner mandrel having an internal flow bore having a common inner diameter with the flow passage through the pipe string and being coaxial with the flow passage so as to become a part of the flow passage; the barrel having an outer surface exposed to the well fluids in the casing annulus; the chamber circumscribing the flow passage for the hydrocarbons; barrier means for closing and opening the fluid communication means; the barrier means responsive to an increase in the pressure in the casing annulus for opening the fluid communication means and allowing well fluids from the casing annulus to flow through the barrel and mandrel and into the flow passage to control the well.
