Clean holes lower drilling cost

Conference · · Annual SME of AIME Meeting; (United States)
OSTI ID:5649566
The traditional bailing velocity recommendations are based on nominal bit and hole sizes. The bailing velocity is less than nominal and probably close to the 15.24 m/sec considered good practice in deep wells. Drill, drill pipe, and bit manufacturers are at work trying to provide products which will reduce costs. Some operating practice changes also may be of considerable help in the cost area. Cleaner holes means greater bit life and faster rates of penetration. Both of these reduce drilling cost as can be seen from the drilling cost equation which is given.
