Experimental analysis of the fundamental two-phase flow characteristics of a pilot-scale airlift fermentor

Detailed measurements of the fundamental two-phase flow characteristics impacting fermentor mixing and gas-liquid mass transfer are presented. Studies using air and water were performed in a pilot-scale (160 liter), external-loop airlift fermentor. The dependence of flow characteristics upon fermentor design and operating parameters is examined through the use of different downcomer-to-riser diameter ratios (0.47 and 0.73), superficial gas velocities (1 to 8 cm/s), and two different ring sparger designs.
