How induction generators work

The operating principles of the induction generator, which is a standard squirrel cage motor in which the shaft is coupled to and driven by an engine or turbine at a rate above its synchronous speed and which, under these conditions, produces electrical power, are described. The advantages of induction generators, e.g., low cost, simplicity, frequency and voltage controlled by the utility system, no synchronizing controls needed, and the advantages of using small induction generators run by wind turbines, small gas turbines and in low head hydro plants are discussed.
