Results of a cross polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) /sup 31/P NMR study of the influence of local symmetry on /sup 31/P chemical shifts in the solid state for six complexes of the type (R/sub 3/P)/sub 2/MCl/sub 2/, where M=Pd or Pt, are reported. For each of these solid cis-complexes, two /sup 31/P resonances separated by 2-4 ppM were observed. The data indicate that while the crystalline sample appeared to be only the cis-isomer from infrared and x-ray crystallographic data, the NMR data indicated that both cis- and trans-isomers were present. However, the CPMAS /sup 31/P spectrum showed only one /sup 31/P resonance; while the CPMAS spectrum showed tow methyl resonances indicting that the complex is truly only cis in the solid state. 10 references 1 table.
