Collisional broadening of the Balmer-. cap alpha. transition of H and He/sup +/ in plasmas

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
We have computed the Stark-broadened width of the H/sub ..cap alpha../ transition of neutral hydrogen (n/sub e/ = 10/sup 15/--10/sup 17/ cm/sup -3/)= and singly ionized helium (n/sub e/ = 10/sup 17/--10/sup 18/ cm/sup -3/)= at several plasma temperatures. Our calculations include dynamical contributions of perturbing ions, which dominated the widths of this important transition, particularly at lower electron densities. We compare our results for neutral hydrogen with experimental results over a span of two decades in electron density (n/sub e/), and excellent agreement is obtained.
