The generation of short far infrared pulses by using a mode-locked CO/sub 2/ pump laser is explored experimentally and theoretically. It is demonstrated that pulses of <1 nsec are obtainable from CH3F at 496 micron and D/sub 2/O at 385 micron. Theoretical estimates indicate the possibility of pulses in the 300 to 600 psec range with a conversion efficiency comparable to the Manley-Rowe limit.
