Igniting a carbonaceous stratum for in situ combustion

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5645710
An annulus around a well in an oil stratum is burned out to improve its permeability and subsequent oil production. This is accomplished by installing a permeable tubular ceramic liner downhole, injecting a slug of autoignitable fuel, such as tung oil, through the liner into the oil stratum, injecting a following slug of liquid hydrocarbon miscible with the fuel to free the liner of the fuel, driving the slugs deeper into the stratum with injected inert gas, and thereafter injecting air through the well into the stratum to contact, ignite, and burn out the injected fuel and in-place carbonaceous material.
