Diffusion of protium and deuterium in the. cap alpha. and. beta. phases of LaNi/sub 5/

This paper studies the diffusion of the low concentrations of interstitial hydrogen atoms in the a-phase of LaNi/sub 5/ and of the considerably higher concentrations of these atoms in the b-phase. Temperature dependences were obtained for the protium and deuterium diffusion coefficients in both phases. A generalized kinetic equation was derived for the determination of the coefficients for diffusion in the b-phase and for the reaction on the boundary surface on the a- and b-phases. The parameters of the Arrhenius equation which describes the diffusion process depend on the occupancy of the interstices. The diffusion isotope data are in accord with the proposed mechanism.
