PCBs in Lake Michigan fish and the outcome of birth size
- Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison (USA)
This epidemiologic investigation evaluates the effects of transplacental exposure to biologically persistent PCBs and other chlorinated hydrocarbons, primarily through consumption of contaminated sport fish, on reproductive outcomes. The study population of 1,120 females was recruited from women during their first prenatal visits to two clinics in Green Bay, Wisconsin. During their first prenatal visit, participants were given questionnaires to assess fish consumption, socioeconomic status and medical, occupational, and maternal behavior histories. A sample of maternal blood for analysis was obtained during a regularly scheduled blood draw and from a sample of cord blood during delivery. Live births were assessed for birth size (birth weight, crown-heel length, and head circumference) and gestational age, apgar scores, and major congenital anomalies. The proportion of fetal wastage and stillbirths is also being assessed.
