Thermal applications of solar energy: a professional guide

Book ·
OSTI ID:5641882
The equipment used in solar heating and cooling is described, including several collector types, control systems, heat storage equipment, and such related equipment as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and insulation. Design of solar space heating systems is discussed, including sizing, protection of the collector-loop from freezing and overheating, collector system design, and interface with space heating and domestic water heating systems. Active solar cooling systems, absorption chillers in particular, are described, and their sizing and design are discussed including the auxiliary air conditioning system. Also cooling by nocturnal radiation with solar collectors is covered. Solar water heating systems for domestic hot water, industrial hot water, and swimming pools are described. A method for computation of solar heat collection is provided that does not require the use of expensive computer facilities. Programs suitable for a programmable calculator are listed and explained for determination of payback period and cost-effectiveness and for computing heat collection. (LEW)
