Upgrading a production machine tool for precision machining
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:5641871
This report summarizes the work done to apply state-of-the-art precision-machining technology to an existing machine tool. A two-axis, T-base lathe was retrofitted with air-bearing slides and spindle, laser interferometer feedback, electric drives, a vibration-isolation base, and a computer numerical control system. The resulting contouring capability for a spherical part improved from 4 ..mu..m (160 ..mu..in.) to 1.27 ..mu..m (50 ..mu..in.) while the surface finish capability improved from approx. 0.23 ..mu..m (9 ..mu..in.) to 0.1 ..mu..m (4 ..mu..in.) peak-to-valley.
