Reflection seismology: a tool for energy resource exploration

Book ·
OSTI ID:5637672

This book presents an up-to-date framework of modern reflection seismology, with the ultimate purpose being the search for commercial sources of hydrocarbons. After a basic introductory chapter, the following topics are examined: basic physical principles - waves in elastic solids (including Zoeppritz equations and spherically symmetrical acoustic waves); sources and receivers (including simplistic analysis of the air cushion vibrator and the Vibroseis system); description of wave trains and the characteristics of the reflection process (including synthetic records using complex velocities); seismic data gathering methods; seismic data processing (including adaptive filters); the calculation and measurement of auxiliary information (including maximum entropy spectral analysis); resolution and diffractions; migration - the correct placement of reflectors and diffractors (including calculation of diffraction curves for a given velocity depth function); near-surface corrections (including interpolation of seismic traces using the sin x/x method); the interpretation problem (including location of depth of overpressured zones); and new tools in the making. 253 references, 211 figures, 4 tables.
