Wave functions of particles in an instanton field are found which are characterized at infinity by a definite on-shell value of the 4-momentum. The quark propagator is expanded in these functions, which have the nondiagonal matrix elements not equal to zero. The Green function of massless quarks and the fermion zero modes are constructed for a finite chemical potential. It is shown that the zero modes are due to the nondiagonal matrix elements, that is, they are associated with particle scattering in the self-dual field. The results are generalized to 5n-parameter multi-instanton fields and arbitrary temperatures.
