The success of several European and US projects to store natural gas in mined salt caverns indicates that this technique will become an important peak-shaving alternative, according to kavernen Bau- and Betriebs G.m.b.H. Developing a salt cavern involves preliminary mining studies and computer-simulation programs to evaluate the site's suitability. The actual mining begins with drilling a conventional deep well. Fresh water pumped from the surface dissolves the salt and returns to the surface as a brine, leaving a cavity that grows as the process continues. When the desired cavern volume is reached (as shown by sonic survey data), most of the brine is displaced by the injected gas. Before sending it to the utility grid, the gas withdrawn from the cavern is dried in dehydration facilities.
