Manifold seal structure for fuel cell stack
This patent describes an electrochemical cell stack assembly. It comprises: a stack of electrochemical cells adapted to use gaseous reactants in an electrochemical reaction, the stack having side walls through which the gaseous reactants are admitted to the cells; gas manifolds mounted on the stack adjacent the side walls, each of the manifolds having edge sealing flanges thereon; sealing gaskets sandwiched between the manifold edge sealing flanges and the stack side wall to seal the manifold interior from ambient surroundings; each of the manifold edge sealing flanges having opening formed therein; and means for pressing the manifold edge sealing flanges against the sealing gaskets sufficiently to cause localized portions of the gaskets to extrude into the manifold sealing flange openings to form protruding interlocks between the gaskets and the sealing flanges which resist lateral movement of the manifolds relative to the gaskets.
