Excitation of stationary waves in a plasma through the injection of cold electron bunches

The dynamics of cold electron bunches periodically injected into a plasma is analyzed. An exact solution is derived for the nonlinear equation for the electron trajectory in the steady state. This solution describes nonlinear stationary waves (BGK waves). The conditions for the stability of the equilibrium against identical perturbations for each bunch are determined. The perturbation growth rates are calculated for the unstable bunches.
