Differences in intraparticle diffusion rates can be exploited to effect separations by pressure swing adsorption. The application considered in this work was the separation of nitrogen from air using molecular sieve RS-10. Experiments were conducted to study many variables including flow rates, duration of steps of the PSA cycle, pressure ratio, and bed geometry. Product nitrogen containing less than 0.5% oxygen with 7% recovery and up to 10% oxygen with 25% recovery were achieved, depending on the operating conditions. Among the operating variables the duration and inlet velocity during high pressure feed step and the pressure ratio have the most significant effects on the product recovery and purity. Finally, the test results are compared with the predictions of a mathematical model.
