The Ln/sub 2/M /SUB g/ TiO6 compounds (Ln = rare earth element) produced in this study crystallize in a perovskite-derived structure. The system Gd/sub 2/M /SUB g/ TiO/sub 6/-Nd/sub 2/M /SUB g/ TiO/sub 6/ was chosen for study of Nd/sup 3 +/ ions in this crystal matrix. Luminescence of the neodymium ions was excited by radiation from a LGI-21 nitrogen laser having a wave length of 0.337 ..mu..m. The luminescence spectra were recorded with a MDR-2 monochromator. The luminescence spectra of neodymium in the region 0.84 to 0.92 ..mu..m and the /sup 4/I/sub 9//2 ..-->.. /sup 4/F/sub 3//2 absorption spectra are shown. A Stark energy-level splitting diagram was constructed based on the analyses of the luminescence and absorption spectra. This is compatible with the local/site symmetry occupied by a neodymium ion in the Gd/sub 2/(1-x)Nd /SUB 2x/ mgTiO/sub 6/(C/sub 1/) structure.
