P-version hierarchical axisymmetric shell element for heat conduction
- Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Univ. of Kansas, Lawrence, KS (US)
This paper presents a completely hierarchical, axisymmetric shell finite element for heat conduction. The element temperature field can be of arbitrary polynomial orders p{sub {xi}} and p{sub {eta}} in the longitudinal {xi} and the transverse {eta} directions of the shell element. The approximation functions and the corresponding nodal variables for the axisymmetric shell element are derived by, first, constructing the one-dimensional hierarchical approximation functions of orders p{sub {xi}} and p{sub {eta}} and the corresponding hierarchical nodal operators for each of the two directions {xi} and {eta} and than taking their product. Both the element approximation functions and the nodal variables are hierarchical. The formulation ensures C{sup 0} continuity across the interelement boundaries.
