Interstellar synthesis of the cyanopolynes and related molecules

The cyanopolyynes HC/sub 2/CN, HC/sub 4/CN, HC/sub 6/CN, and HC/sub 8/CN, and the molecules CH/sub 3/CHCN and CH/sub 3/CH/sub 2/CN, have recently been detected in the interstellar medium. We show that the observed abundances of these molecules can be obtained by gas-phase formation pathways if the reaction of H/sub 2/CN/sup +/ with C/sub 2/H/sub 2/ is rapid at low interstellar temperatures. The molecules CH/sub 2/CHCN and C/sub 3/N may be formed also by the reactions of H/sub 2/CN/sup +/ with C/sub 2/H/sub 2/, and CH/sub 3/CH/sub 2/CN may be formed by reaction of H/sub 2/CN/sup +/ with C/sub 2/H/sub 4/.
