Eighteen sources of coal-mine drainage are identified; eight sources are considered large enough to have detectable effects on receiving streams. Coal wastes contribute large quantities of acid drainage to receiving streams during storm runoff; coal wastes in streambeds and seepage from coal wastes also have significant effects on receiving streams during base flows. Effects of drainage from strip mines on receiving streams are minimal compared to drainage from coal wastes and underground mines.
