Determination of bound vinyl acetate in copolymer additives

Pour-depressant additives based on EVAC (ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer) are used to improve low-temperature properties of petroleum. The quality control is the content of bound VA (vinyl acetate). This article introduces the PR spectrophotometer method to determine the bound VA. Means of diluting gel additives for control samples are detailed. An analytic absorption band is chosen. Conditions and optical densities are plotted according to the given ratio, and an equation is arrived at. This procedure is three times as fast as the hydrolysis method of determining bound VA, and is therefore recommended for quality control.
