Because of the lack of an authoritative source of information on the corrosion of steel piling in soil, a research project is proposed to make such information available to engineers, researchers, and other corrosion professionals. The objective of the project would be to generate data for the corrosion rate of steel piling in chemically contaminated soils. The data are required to make sound engineering decisions. The scope of the project would include: Locating sites known to be chemically contaminated, such as landfills in different parts of the United States; Collecting the soil characteristics at each site; Installing the steel piling and required sensors to collect the required data; Collecting the corrosion rate data periodically; and Reporting the results of the data collected periodically to the scientific community to stimulate new standards in several applicable areas.
