An atomic beam source or molecular beam source constructed in accordance with this invention comprises a porous wicking oven substrate (which as used herein means the body of the oven). The oven is heated so as to maintain a temperature gradient between the orifice and a portion of the substrate remote from the orifice so as to create a source region for providing evaporated working material molecules in line of sight with the orifice, and a collimating region including at least a portion of the cavity for collimating the evaporated working material molecules to form the molecular beam and for recirculating working material condensate to the source region of the substrate.
