Current US military-industry programs to push aero jet engine performance into the next generation could drastically change future industrial and marine gas turbine design, materials, performance and cost. The Integrated High Performance Turbine Energy Technology (IHPTET) initiative, which involves essentially all the major players in US advanced gas turbine engine technology, was set up to have a revolutionary impact on the country's future military aerospace propulsion systems. But the program, established by the Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is also being closely watched for its commercial ramifications which extend from tomorrow's passenger planes to ground power applications of all kinds. More specifically, the aero engine program aims to double performance, cut fuel consumption, and reduce costs.
