The extraction of quantitative amounts of aluminum, zirconium, and iron from citric acid solutions of di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid in decane is performed in the presence of isooctanol. The study was made in the concentration ranges of from 7.4 X 10/sup -3/ to 2.23 X 10/sup -1/ mole/liter of aluminum, from 1.1 X 10/sup -3/ to 5.5 X 10/sup -2/ mole/liter of zirconium, and from 1.79 X 10/sup -5/ to 1.79 X 10/sup -2/ mole/liter of iron. It was found that the extraction of aluminum, zirconium, and iron proceeds by a cation exchange mechanism with the formation of compounds ZrA/sub 4/ X 2HA, FeA/sub 3/ X (2n-3)HA and A1A/sub 3/ X (2n-3)HA. It was shown that the presence of aluminum and zirconium in the extraction system changes the distribution coefficients of curium, californium, and europium, but practically does not influence their separation.
