Twenty years ago, merciless competition from mineral oil began displacing domestic coal in the Federal Republic of Germnay. The consequences were dramatic and disastrous; between 1957 and 1978 the number of West German mines fell from 173 to 42 and production decreased from 150,000,000 to about 85,000,000 metric tons. During the same period, mine industry personnel shrunk from over 800,000 to around 180,000. Ten years ago, the German hard coal mining industry was restructured by the foundation of Rurkohle AG. Five years ago, as an answer to the oil crisis, the federal government decreed an increased use of German hard coal in order to improve energy supply security. Because of its economically and technically recoverable reserves of 24,000,000,000 tons of hard coal and its pro-coal energy policy, the Federal Republc is relatively well prepared for the comeback of coal. The German hard coal industry is not only striving to secure its present indvidual markets but also to expand them. The growth in domestic hard coal consumption is expected to be about 15,000,000 tons by 1985, and 30,000,000 to 40,000,000 tons by 1990. To meet expected consumption in the long term, both domestic and foreign coal will be needed. Additional coal requirements can be met by he German coal industry until 1985.
