The kinetic isotope effect in the phototransfer of a proton in ion pairs with a hydrogen bond, formed by aromatic amines with acids and butyronitrile, has been investigated. It is shown that in the case of deuterated acids the reaction is retarded and the isotope effect (k/sub 1/H/K/sub 1/D) lies between 1.3 and 4.5. The value of the isotope effect is close to the quasiclassical value and the pre-exponential factors of the reaction in the case of isotope substituation remain practically the same. It has been concluded that in the investigated systems the phototransfer of the proton proceeds according to an activation mechanism and the coordinate of the reaction represents the transfer of the proton via the hydrogen bond.
