Decay of the isoscalar giant resonances in /sup 208/Pb

The decay of the giant-resonance region in /sup 208/Pb has been studied in a ..cap alpha..'-..gamma.. angular correlation experiment via the reaction chain /sup 208/Pb(..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..')/sup 208/Pb/sup GR/(n)/sup 207/Pb* (..gamma..)/sup 207/Pb. The correlation functions are in agreement with the assumption of predominant E2 strength for the resonance around E/sub x/=10.9 MeV, but require considerable strengths of excitation modes higher than E0 for the resonance around E/sub x/=13.7 MeV. The coincident ..cap alpha..-particle spectra show significant fine structure in the giant-resonance region.
