Advantages of drainback system in freeze protection

The direct-open loop solar domestic water heating system at the Woodlands Conference Center was modified to a drain-down system when the water quality was found unacceptable. The system, which has a single-walled heat exchanger, was modified to a closed system in which the plain water transfer fluid drains from the collector array to a sump tank. The heating system utilizes differential thermostats and several pumps to circulate water through the collectors and to the heat exchanger.
