Heavens and the earth: a political history of the space age

Book ·
OSTI ID:5627918
McDougall's book examines the development of the US and Soviet space programs in the context of US-Soviet rivalry and domestic politics in the two countries. He shows how the space programs were shaped by politics and the effect that these programs have had on political life. His book is a reflection on the relationship between technology and society and on the dominant features of modern civilization. It also explores the idea that American innocence was corrupted, that technocracy is unAmerican. The reviewer argues that the theme does not always fit, especially since the Soviet expansion in the field took place after the Manhattan project and German rocket programs had demonstrated the potential for large-scale technology, but that the book as a whole is a model for studying the effects of technology.
