The design of the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) monitored retrievable storage (MRS) facility has evolved and will continue to evolve in the role that the facility will play in the overall waste management system. The purpose of this paper is to review the evolution of the role of MRS in the waste management system and its impact on the design of the MRS facility.
