Hot isostatic pressing of Y2O3-partially stabilized zirconia

Journal Article · · Am. Ceram. Soc. Bull.; (United States)

Strength enhancement of Y2O3-partially stabilized zirconia (Y2O3-PSZ) was achieved by hot isostatic pressing. Improvement of strength in hot isostatic pressed materials depended strongly on the conditions of presintering. Results of fractography observations suggest that the hot isostatic pressing yields the elimination of large pores in the presintered body, with subsequent strength enhancement. The Y2O3-compositional dependence of strength is examined 3 mol pct Y2O3-PSZ exhibited mean bending strength as high as 1500 MPa. 15 references.
