Simple complex-terrain Monte Carlo dispersion code for an instantaneous volume source

The Monte Carlo simulation approach appears to be an ideal method for modeling pollutant dispersion over a complex terrain since it is more realistic than the conventional Gaussian plume model and does not suffer from the eddy size limitation problem in a gradient transport approach. Numerous Monte Carlo models are available to simulate pollutant dispersion due to a continuous source. But only a few papers in the literature dealt with the extra complication of simulating pollutant dispersion due to an instantaneous source, namely, space correlation associated with relative diffusion in addition to time correlation. Although some general schemes have been suggested, a working computer code explicitly coupling a three-dimensional Monte Carlo dispersion model to a complex terrain wind field model has not been readily available to mathematical modelers who wish to perform hazard analysis as a result of sudden release of dangerous material over a complex terrain. To fill this void, a new Monte Carlo scheme for an instantaneous source, combining the features of relative diffusion theory, similarity theory and direct objective wind field analysis, is proposed here. A compact FORTRAN code has also been prepared to apply this scheme. An effort was made to simplify both the theory and the computer code without losing realism.
