On glazing the south facade

A comparative evaluation of glazing area and orientation for a well-insulated house in Concord, NH, is presented. In one case, 100 ft/sup 2/ of north-facing windows are moved to the south, while in the second case, 100 ft/sup 2/ of glazing were added to the south side, leaving the north glazing in place. The useful monthly solar heat gains for the two systems were tabulated and results indicated that each square foot of added glazing returns less and less useful energy. The glazing added to the south side resulted in lower energy productivity than the moved glazing partly because the former replaced a well insulated wall, increasing the base heat load of the building.
