An automatic fission track scanner has been developed for fission track counting. The system consists of a scanning optical microscope and a microcomputer to perform scanning, data acquisition, and analysis. Output from this system provides the total number of tracks, a track size distribution, the locations as well as sizes of individual tracks, and a partial scanned image. Fused quartz has been found to be the most suitable recorder medium for the current system. The stability of the system has been extensively checked; a counting reproducibility of +/- 3% (one standard deviation) has been achieved. A /sup 224/Cm spontaneous fission source has been used to determine the detection efficiency of the system.
