The Rocky Mountain region extends from Canada to Mexico and from the Great Plains to the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Mountains. The region's 550 million acres are characterized by remarkable physical and biological diversity. Approximately 25% of the area is forest land, with ownership dominated by the federal government. The USDA Forest Service and the USDI Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and National Park Service manage 96 million acres. The region can be divided, for discussion purposes, into the northern Rockies (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and part of South Dakota) and the southern Rockies (Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado). This paper discusses the management objectives for this vast nature reserve.
