Electrochemical industries consume about 7% of all the electric power produced in the United States, and the production of chlorine and caustic soda by the chlor-alkali industry accounts for the equivalent energy consumption of 287,000 barrels of oil daily. Clearly, any improvement in chlor-alkali process efficiency would have a significant impact on U.S energy consumption. Mercury, diaphragm, and membrane electrolysis cells currently dominate the electrolytic chlorine-caustic industry. The authors discuss membrane cells because they represent the emerging technology.
