Title: Hydraulically pulsed indexing system for sleeve-type core barrels

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5623553

An apparatus is described for use in a coring tool in a drill string in which hydraulic pressure is selectively applied, the drill string including a core barrel, and a flexible sleeve for receiving a core into the core barrel, the sleeve radially contracting upon application of longitudinal tension. The apparatus consists of: a stripper tube coupled to the flexible sleeve and concentrically disposed within the core barrel; piston means slidingly disposed within the coring tool between a first upper and second lower longitudinal position, the stripper tube being disposed through the piston means and generally longitudinally displaceable with respect thereto, the piston means selectively seizing the stripper tube when the piston means is urged longitudinally upward; and resilient means for selectively applying and continuously maintaining an upward tensile force to the stripper tube independent of hydraulic pressure in the coring tool and thence applying the tensile force to the flexible sleeve and core disposed therein, whereby a core may be cut from a highly fractured rock formation and retentively disposed within the flexible sleeve while the sleeve is continuously maintained under tension by combined operation of the stripper tube and piston means.
