Four days of hearings held to review DOE's 1984 budget proposal for fossil energy, conservation, and renewable energy sources focused on the 56%, 75%, and 60%, respectively, cuts from the 1983 budget. The committee expressed concern over whether free enterprise would pick up the abandoned research, and whether it is in the national interest to commit 85% of the energy research budget to nuclear energy. Particular attention was placed on building energy research and the 60 research topics evaluated at an earlier workshop. The 20 witnesses included representatives of DOE, the Energy Research Advisory Board, universities, private companies, and organizations. (DCK)
