To meet vacuum filtration needs during an earlier approximately 5-yr period of fertilizer production at the Hyperion facility, large-scale thermophilic digestion operations were carried on. Subsequently, both fertilizer production and thermophilic digestion operations were phased out. Federal and state regulations now make it necessary to consider wastewater solids dewatering processes. Because the earlier work with thermophilically digested solids had shown considerable benefit in the dewatering step by such processing, it was deemed necessary to repeat the work by using various mechanical dewatering devices and chemical combinations that had not previously been available.
