Superconductivity and phase stability in the heavy rare earth quaternary compounds RBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ (R = Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu)

Phase stabiliy and superconducting properties of heavy rare earth compounds RBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ (R = Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) were studied and found to be unstable above 950/sup 0/C. Transition temperatures depend heavily on starting materials, thermal history, oxygen content and the interpretation of the data. Magnetic rare earth ions have little effect on the transition temperature. However, these magnetic compounds should order magnetically, probably in the mK range. 10 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.
