Skin-layer absorption of cyclotron radiation in the Araks experiment

Analytic calculations and numerical estimates of the heating of the electronic component of the plasma with propagation of VLF waves in the skin layer omega approx. Omega/sub e/ for the Araks experiment are presented. In the experiment electron pulses were injected from a rocket into the ionosphere (I/sub 0/ = 0.5 A, E/sub 0/ = 27 and 15 keV are the starting parameters of the electron pulses). It is shown that the VLF bursts observed during the pauses between electron pulses could be linked with the decay of VLF waves in the nonisothermal plasma in the skin layer.
