The United States produced 1.0% less energy during the first 8 months of 1987 than during the same period in 1986, but US consumption was up 0.8%, compared with levels during the first 8 months of 1986. Energy production during August 1987 totaled 5.4 quadrillion Btu, a 2.0% increase compared with the level of production during August 1986. Coal production was up 4.9% and natural gas production increased 2.3%, while petroleum production decreased 1.0%. All other forms of energy production combined were up 2.2% from the level of production during August 1986. Energy consumption during August 1987 totaled 6.2 quadrillion Btu, 3.8% above the level of consumption during August 1986. Coal consumption increased 13.6%, and natural gas consumption rose 4.7%, while petroleum consumption decreased 1.8%.
