Computer simulation of laser photon fluctuations. III. Coupled-cavity lasers. IV. DFB lasers

Journal Article · · IEEE J. Quant. Electron.; (United States)

Photon probability distributions for multimode coupled-cavity lasers are computed, and it is found that the instantaneous photon fluctuations are just as large as those of simple, single-cavity lasers. However, because the longitudinal modes of coupled-cavity lasers have much larger loss differences than those of single-cavity lasers, coupled cavity lasers are less prone to mode hopping if pulsed by direct modulation of their drive currents. These results pertain to idealized conditions thermal effects and the influence of reflected light on the laser performance are ignored. 12 references.
