Gas phase spectroscopy near the carbon K-edge

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5615410
Soft x-ray excitation involving C 1s electrons in CO, as well as aliphatic, and aromatic hydrocarbons is found to result in ionic fragmentation of the original molecule. The fragmentation pattern changes whether the C 1s electron gets ionized or excited into a Rydberg-like orbital, or into an unfilled molecular orbital. In this study we correlate the near edge C 1s absorption spectra with the observation of specific ionic fragments of the original molecules.
