Most of the oil and gas fields have been found in the past 10 yr. The oil and gas production of the Soviet Union comes from over 1,000 hydrocarbon deposits. These are situated in the 7 main basins: Volga-Ural, W. Siberia, middle Caspian, S. Caspian, Karakum, Dnieper-Donets, and Timano-Pechorsky. Each of these basins is discussed. West Siberia is considered to be the biggest producing areas of the future. The W. Siberian platform consists of terrigenous deposits of Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Paleogene strata, and to a lesser degree of Neogene beds. The Triassic and Paleozoic are developed only in the basement troughs. The 5-km sedimentary cover is broken by some major uplifts, depressions, and troughs. The oil- and gas-bearing capacities of the basin were not established until 1953 with the discovery of the Beryozovo gas deposit on the Severo-Sosvinsky fault. Currently, over 75 oil and oil with gas deposits are known and 45 nonassociated gas deposits. The deposits of Jurassic and Cretaceous periods connected with local uplifts on the faults and in troughs, are also oil- and gas-bearing.
